Taunton's housing inventory was not built with townhome buyers in mind. The city's 24,000 housing structures are heavily tilted toward single-family homes, older triple-deckers, and small-scale condominium conversions — the kind of properties where the median construction year is 1964 and the systems often match. For buyers who want the space and privacy of a house but without the maintenance burden of a half-acre lot, the pickings within city limits are slim. The few townhouse-style condos that exist tend to be resale stock from the 1980s and 1990s, and they move quickly in a market where the median home price in Bristol County has pushed past $470,000.
New-construction townhomes are essentially unavailable inside Taunton. But within 10 to 25 minutes of the city, Thorndike Development builds two communities with attached homes designed for a range of buyers — from downsizers leaving four-bedroom colonials to young families priced out of the single-family market.
Larkwood in Raynham is the closest option — about 10 minutes east on Route 44, in a riverside setting along the Taunton River. The community has 138 homes across six floor plans, from the single-level Hickory at 1,671 square feet to the three-story Birch at 2,830 square feet. Every plan includes a private garage, hardwood flooring in the main living areas, and a ground-floor flex room — a dedicated bonus space at the garage level that buyers have configured as home offices, guest suites, workshops, and music studios. No other new-construction townhome community in the region offers this feature in every home.
Larkwood pricing starts from $559,000 for the Hickory and extends to $679,000 for the Birch. The neighborhood design uses courtyard streetscapes with rear-loaded parking, so the views from each home are of entries, porches, and landscaping rather than garage doors. A kayak launch provides direct access to the Taunton River, and walking trails connect through the property's mature woodlands to a community garden with raised beds.
Alden's Reach in Plymouth is roughly 25 minutes from Taunton via Routes 44 and 3. It is a multigenerational community of 152 homes that includes townhomes, duplexes, and ground-level flats across eight floor plans spanning 1,671 to 2,648 square feet. The amenity package is broader than most — a pool, four-season poolhouse with fireplace lounge, fire pit, and trails that extend into Plymouth's conservation land. Pricing starts from $569,000. Plymouth's harbor waterfront and retail adds a lifestyle dimension that Raynham's more rural setting does not replicate.
Taunton's resale townhouse condos typically trade in the mid-$300,000s to low $400,000s — lower than the new-construction options nearby. But the comparison is not straightforward. Resale stock in Taunton generally means 30-year-old buildings with older HVAC systems, limited insulation, smaller floor plans, and shared parking lots rather than private garages. Monthly utility costs are higher. HOA reserves may be underfunded for buildings approaching major capital expenses like roof replacement and siding.
At Larkwood, the construction is current-code energy efficient. Each home has a private garage, its own HVAC system, and the ground-floor flex room that resale townhomes simply do not offer. The HOA covers exterior maintenance, landscaping, and snow removal — the same low-maintenance appeal that draws buyers to condos, but in a home with a private entry, a garage, and outdoor space. On a price-per-square-foot basis, the new homes are competitive with resale, especially when factoring in the avoided cost of immediate renovations.
The reason Taunton works as a base — even when the homes themselves are in neighboring towns — is access. Route 24 runs north to Brockton and Boston. I-495 connects west to the Route 9 corridor and south toward the Cape. Route 44 cuts east through Raynham toward Plymouth. For commuters, Boston is about 35 minutes north via Route 24, and Providence is roughly the same distance west. The Middleborough/Lakeville commuter rail station sits about 15 minutes south, with service to South Station on the Old Colony line.
Within Taunton, the infrastructure supports an active daily life. The Myles Standish Industrial Park — more than 1,000 acres and the largest publicly owned business park in New England — means local employment without a highway commute. The Taunton Green, on the National Register of Historic Places, anchors a downtown with the District Center for the Arts. Massasoit State Park, straddling the Taunton-Raynham border, offers more than 1,000 acres of forest, swimming at Lake Rico, and miles of trails.
Thorndike Development has been building attached-home neighborhoods in southeastern Massachusetts for more than 40 years. In nearby Norton — about 15 minutes north of Taunton — the company completed Red Mill Village, which won the National Association of Home Builders' award for Best Active Adult Community in the Nation. Greatbrook, also in Norton, was Thorndike's first active adult community, sited next to TPC Boston. In Raynham itself, the company built Copperworks, a neighborhood of attached homes that applied many of the same courtyard-design principles that Larkwood now extends.
For buyers who want single-level living rather than a townhome, Featherwinds in Halifax offers 102 elevator-served condos in a dedicated 55+ community about 20 minutes from Taunton. Every home is one floor with no stairs from garage to front door, priced from $439,000 — a different product entirely, but one that some townhome shoppers end up preferring once they see how the elevator-building format eliminates stairs without sacrificing square footage or finishes.
Not within city limits. The nearest new townhome community is Larkwood in Raynham, about 10 minutes east on Route 44 — six floor plans from $559,000 to $679,000 with private garages and flex rooms.
The Birch at Larkwood — 2,830 square feet across three levels with a two-car garage, ground-floor flex room, and upper primary suite with cathedral ceilings. Priced from $679,000.
Yes. Every home at Larkwood includes a private garage — one-car on smaller plans, two-car on the Birch. Alden's Reach in Plymouth also includes private garages with all townhome and duplex plans.
The Hickory at Larkwood is a ground-level home with no stairs — 1,671 square feet on one floor with a garage and flex room. Featherwinds in Halifax offers elevator-served single-level condos from $439,000.
About 10 minutes east via Route 44. Larkwood is on Church Street in Raynham, near the intersection of Routes 44 and 24 — close enough to keep your Taunton doctors, groceries, and daily routine.
