East Bridgewater is a town whose roots run to the founding of Plymouth Colony. The land was originally called Satucket by the Wampanoag people, and the 1649 purchase from Sachem Massasoit — negotiated by Miles Standish himself on a bedrock outcropping that is now Sachem Rock Farm — established the boundaries that would eventually become the four Bridgewaters. Iron works here supplied muskets and cannons to the Continental Army during the Revolution, and the town’s residents are credited with producing the first machine-cut nails in Plymouth County.
Today about 14,600 people live in East Bridgewater’s 17.5 square miles, bordered by Whitman to the north, Hanson and Halifax to the east, Bridgewater to the south, and West Bridgewater and Brockton to the west. The Satucket River and Matfield River flow through town before merging to form the Taunton River near the Bridgewater line. Robbins Pond, the largest body of water in town, sits in the southeastern corner. Route 18 runs north-south through the center, Route 106 crosses east-west in the south, and Route 24 is accessible in neighboring towns. The median home price is approximately $624,000, and the housing stock is heavily weighted toward older single-family colonials and ranches.
East Bridgewater’s land use is primarily residential and agricultural, with limited commercial development and no new-construction 55+ communities with elevator access. Buyers 55 and older who want single-level living — with no stairs, modern finishes, and active-adult amenities — have two strong options within 10 to 15 minutes: Featherwinds in neighboring Halifax and Larkwood in Raynham.
Halifax borders East Bridgewater to the east, putting Featherwinds about 10 minutes away via Route 106 to Route 58. The community offers 102 condominiums in three elevator-served buildings, every home single-level with no stairs from garage to front door. Five plans range from the 1,027 sq ft Breeze (one bedroom plus den) to the 1,598 sq ft Wind (two bedrooms plus den, corner unit), priced {{price:featherwinds}}.
Active-adult amenities include four pickleball courts managed by the Town of Halifax, Victory Gardens with raised beds, a dog park, and a four-season poolhouse with outdoor kitchen and firepit patio. A new Halifax Senior Center is under construction at the community entrance on Thorndike-donated land — when complete, it will be the only 55+ community in the region with a town-operated social hub built on-site. The cranberry-country setting near Monponsett Pond gives Featherwinds a rural character that matches what East Bridgewater residents are accustomed to, without the maintenance burden of a standalone home.
About 15 minutes west via Route 106 to Route 24, Larkwood in Raynham is not age-restricted but offers three floor plans with main-level primary suites: the Chestnut, Hickory, and Pine. The Hickory is a true ground-level plan with zero stairs. All 138 homes include a two-car garage and a ground-level flex room — a finished space that downsizers are using as home offices, guest suites, and hobby rooms. Prices start {{price:larkwood}}, and a canoe and kayak launch on the Taunton River, walking trails, and Massasoit State Park a mile south provide outdoor access.
About 25 minutes from East Bridgewater via Route 106 to Route 3, Alden’s Reach in Plymouth offers 152 townhomes, duplexes, and ground-level flats for all ages. The Hickory plan is a true ground-level condominium with no stairs, priced {{price:aldens-reach}}. Pool, four-season poolhouse, conservation trails, fire pit. Plymouth’s waterfront and Myles Standish State Forest are under 15 minutes from the community.
East Bridgewater residents may know Thorndike Development through Chapman’s Reach in neighboring Bridgewater — a multi-generational community that brought Smart Growth-style neighborhood design to the area. Thorndike has been building homes in Massachusetts since 1983, delivering more than 3,500 homes and earning 45 industry awards including national recognition from the NAHB. The company’s fully integrated model means one team handles design, construction, sales, and customer service — no outside general contractor to navigate.
Featherwinds is a senior living community where residents own their condominiums — this is homeownership with HOA-maintained exteriors and common areas, not rental housing and not assisted living. For East Bridgewater residents who have built equity in a home over 25 or 30 years, the idea of switching to a rental apartment can feel like losing ground. Featherwinds preserves ownership while eliminating the maintenance burden that drives many over-55 homeowners to consider the move in the first place. The starting price under $450,000 is well below the $624,000 median in East Bridgewater, and the monthly HOA covers building exteriors, landscaping, snow removal, and access to all community amenities including the pool, pickleball courts, and Victory Gardens.
No new-construction 55+ community exists within East Bridgewater. The closest is Featherwinds in neighboring Halifax, about 10 minutes east via Route 106 to Route 58, with elevator-served condominiums from the high $430s.
Sachem Rock Farm is the historic site where Miles Standish negotiated the 1649 land purchase from Sachem Massasoit on behalf of Plymouth Colony. The property is now town-owned and hosts a new senior and community center.
The MBTA line passes through the western edge of town, but the nearest stations are in Bridgewater, Whitman, and Halifax. All three provide commuter rail access to South Station in Boston.
Featherwinds in Halifax is about 10 minutes east. Larkwood in Raynham is about 15 minutes west. Both are accessible via Route 106, which crosses through the southern part of East Bridgewater.
Yes. Thorndike built Chapman’s Reach in neighboring Bridgewater, a multi-generational community that earned national recognition from the NAHB for its Smart Growth neighborhood design.
